Microsoft have recently introduced a new feature called ‘Clutter’ in Office365. Clutter helps Outlook decide what emails you do not need to read immediately, and moves them into a folder called Clutter – out of your inbox. If you have been experiencing missing emails, try locating a folder called Clutter, they might just be hiding away in there.
Although Microsoft means well with this feature, for some it may just be a little too invasive to actually be helpful. Clutter was created to help manage your inbox but for some it may just end up creating confusion. Others may want to improve the way it assesses incoming emails.
Loathe it? Turn it off!
Follow these steps, or call Zynet Customer Support Desk to assist you:
- From Outlook, click File… click the link to access your account on the web (see example below)

- This will take you to the web console for your Office365 mailbox, you may need to sign in
- Once you are logged in, you will see a cog icon in the top right hand corner… click it
- Click Options
- Under Mail, you will see an item called Clutter… click it
- To disable the Clutter feature, simply select the option “Don’t separate items identified as clutter” and click the Save button
- Done, you can now log out of the web console
Love it? Improve it!
If you consider this function to be a blessing rather than a curse, there are ways to make it understand your emails a little better (and quicker). This function works off signals, which gradually accumulate for Clutter to learn what emails are important to you.
This process can be accelerated by acting as a form of ‘manual clutter’ just after the feature is enabled and achieved by moving the emails you would rather skip right over, into the Clutter folder or simply by marking each items as Clutter. Clutter will learn from your preferences and improve the way it assesses the incoming mail. Therefore, the more advice you give it, the better the feature will function.
